Can someone give me the straight of this?
I am mostly a newbie and have a few pre-65 coins, and that's about it.
I had always understood that all dollars, half-dollars, quarters, and dimes pre-65 were 90% silver, and those 65-69 were 40%. I also know that the bicentennial series with "S" mint mark are also 40%. Someone posted on another forum that 65-69 quarters and dimes had no silver content. Which is true? Straighten this out for me, please. |

Re 1965-1970....
Only the half dollars are 40% silver; the dimes and quarters are slugs. |

Most Ikes are NOT 40% silver. All 1971 through 1976 Ikes with an S mint mark are 40% silver (1973 and 1974 40% silver Ikes are proof only). The Bicentennial Ikes, like the Bicentennial quarters, were struck in 1975 and 1976, so one won't find any 1975 Ikes or quarters. However, NOT all Bicentennial Ikes with an S mint mark are 40% silver. In 1977 and 1978, no Ikes were struck on 40% silver planchets.
